Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (2024)

Highlights

  • Curse marks in Naruto are powerful enhancements that amplify strength and grant new abilities to recipients.
  • Jirobo's curse mark gives him ten times his original strength, allowing him to lift characters like Choji in his Mult-Expansion Jutsu.
  • Kimimaro's curse mark grants enhanced healing, increased strength, and access to lethal ninjutsu like the Dance of the Clematis: Flower technique.

Orochimaru is notorious for a number of heinous crimes and atrocities within the Naruto world, yet there’s no denying that the curse mark is his most detestable transgression. The cursed seal has been around since the beginning of Naruto, and it has remained an integral part of the series’ premise since then. These curse marks serve as power-ups of sorts, as activating the seal can result in an amplification of up to ten times depending on the curse seal.

Apart from a boost in raw strength and endurance, curse marks are also able to induce new abilities within their recipients. These powers could either entirely belong to the curse mark or simply be an evolved form of the recipient's base abilities. In either case, there’s no denying that the source of these powers is the release of the curse mark.

Jirobo’s Curse Mark

Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (1)

Jirobo’s curse mark comes under the category of the collective Sound 4’s curse marks since it was never indicated whether these belong to the Cursed Seal of Heaven or Earth categories. The seal’s true power lies in its stage two, and in this form, Jirobo transforms into an Ogre-like form and gains access to ten times his original strength.

Since Jirobo doesn’t gain any other power-up from his curse mark, the strength amplification can be deemed his unique ability. His strength becomes so exponential that he is capable of lifting Choji in his Mult-Expansion Jutsu, a technique that expands Choji’s body by multitudes.

Kidomaru’s Curse Mark

Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (2)

Kidomaru unveiled the second stage of his curse mark during his fight with Neji, unlocking a plethora of techniques that gave him an upper hand in battle. The second stage of the curse mark transformed Kidomaru’s body into a spider-like being with a face that resembles an Oni. He grows two extra pairs of arms that aid him in using his lethal crossbow, and a third eye on his forehead that grants him near-perfect accuracy.

Creating the bow used in this technique also requires the second stage of the curse mark, as he can excrete his wax-like substance only in this state. Since the Spider War Bow: Terrible Split technique is locked behind Kidomaru’s curse seal, it's safe to say that this ability can be attributed to his curse mark.

Sakon and Ukon’s Curse Mark

Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (3)

Sakon and Ukon’s curse mark is arguably a more beneficial curse mark compared to the rest. The second stage of their curse mark essentially allows them to easily split apart and stay in that state for a much longer duration. They can also form a black armor over the split half to form limbs, and this can be regenerated if destroyed.

In this state, they can also utilize their fusing ability to attach themselves to their opponent, ripping them up from the inside on a cellular level. While these abilities are a clear result of their curse mark, the Rashom*on Summoning can also come under the curse mark’s powers since they can’t perform this summoning in their regular state.

Tayuya’s Curse Mark

Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (4)

Tayuya’s curse mark doesn’t offer anything unique or specific, as its only benefit is increasing the potency of her techniques. In the second stage of her curse mark, Tayuya grows five horns on her head, though there doesn’t seem to be any practical use of this transformation.

The range of Tayuya’s paralyzing flute is extended exponentially, along with its grip on targets. The second stage also grants Tayuya considerable strength seeing how she was able to resist Shikamaru’s Shadow Possession Jutsu.

Kimimaro’s Curse Mark

Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (5)

Kimimaro’s curse mark is the Cursed Seal of Earth, one of Orochimaru’s strongest curse marks. Since this seal is one of Orochimaru’s perfected versions of the curse mark, Kimimaro has access to a range of powerful abilities in its second stage. His overall strength, chakra, and ninjutsu gain an exponential boost in terms of raw power.

Kimimaro also gains enhanced healing, allowing him to regenerate any injuries almost immediately. The second stage of the curse mark is a prerequisite for the Dance of the Clematis: Flower technique, one of Kimimaro’s most lethal ninjutsu. He can also use the Dance of the Seedling Fern technique in this state, an ability that results in over ten thousand bones sprouting from the ground.

Sasuke’s Curse Mark

Naruto: The Unique Power of Each Curse Mark (6)

Sasuke’s curse mark's second stage is quite renowned, as this power-up allowed him to match Naruto’s One-Tail form with ease. Apart from the generic benefits of the curse mark such as enhanced strength and power, Sasuke can replace any of his torn limbs with snakes that grow from his body, making it a form of pseudo-regeneration.

Sasuke grows webbed wings from his back that allow him to fly. However, these wings serve a lot more purposes than just giving him the ability of flight. They can extend to deal a blow to his opponents, and even protect Sasuke from a direct offense. Sasuke was able to survive Diedera’s explosives multiple times by protecting himself with his wings.

Naruto is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
