On Friday, August 18th, my time as a Sports Anchor/Reporter Intern at WJAR-TV NBC-10 came to an end. As a lifelong RI resident, it was a tremendous honor to join the news station that I grew up watching as a kid. This internship experience gave me a glimpse at what it would be like to cover local sports as well as Boston sports in the region. My responsibilities involved using Avid’s iNews and its editing software, allowing me to strengthen my editing and scriptwriting abilities on a new platform. Every shift, I covered the Red Sox and Yankees game highlights. Some shifts, I covered the NHL and NBA, which included the Bruins and Celtics playoff runs, free agency moves, draft nights, and big-name retirements. Other shifts included covering the NFL, such as draft nights, big player signings, preseason games, and attending Patriots training camp.I would like to thank Sports Director Frank Carpano for allowing me this opportunity. Mr. Carpano made sure the onboarding process was smooth and made me feel welcomed from the beginning. This experience would not have been possible without the mentorship of Taylor Rocha and Nicole Menner. Both wonderful sports journalists allowed me to be hands-on with the technology, helping me build up my skills, and learning how to navigate the toughness of the industry. All their helpful advice will carry with me throughout my career, and I will never forget this incredible experience I had.Looking ahead, I have one semester remaining at Boston University before graduating with my master’s degree in journalism. I have also accepted an internship for the Fall 2023 semester at Channel 7 NEWS, WHDH-TV in Boston, Massachusetts for the same role. It is a busy fall coming up and I am looking forward to what is ahead.

Career tip that resonated with me from the firstAdTech God pod withTerence Kawaja: Put in time in a single industry. People my age and younger often roll their eyes at the advice to be loyal to an employer. I get that. But I think staying in one industry is different. Here's my story:After my sophom*ore year of college, I was looking for a summer journalism internship. I connected with David Hirschman, the co-founder of Street Fight, a media site covering hyperlocal media and advertising/marketing technology. I stayed with Street Fight for eight years (through college, grad school, and afterward). In that time, I went from writing roundups to reporting stories to compiling the daily newsletter to being editor of the site. I learned a ton about adtech and martech and spoke to a bunch of CEOs in the sector. It was this experience — all the people I knew in the industry and the knowledge I had developed about industry trends and debates — that allowed me to transition from journalism to marketing and develop a critical mass of clients.I owe my marketing business, my career, my condo, and all the money in my bank account to the adtech and martech industry. Because I know a lot of people who know a lot of people in this tight-knit industry. And because to my clients, I'm not just another writer or marketer. I get this industry about as well as their full-time employees do. And I'm always getting better because I'm still immersed in it. That combination of connections, knowledge, and skill is what you get when you stay in an industry for a decade. So, my two cents: By all means, be ambitious and pursue new opportunities. But consider putting in time in one industry. It's the word of Adtech God.

Meet Josianne Keenan. She’s a multiplatform journalism senior who, over the summer, was a graphic designer/social media intern for the Rochester Red Wings, a minor league baseball team.“My role went beyond just designing and posting content. I was able to photograph games, record and edit videos, and brainstorm ideas for what content to post. I am originally from Rochester, so I have always heard of the Red Wings but never actually went to a game. After taking a sports media course last summer with Dr. Ted Petersen, I knew what interested me the most and what direction of media I wanted to highlight. Before this internship, I was able to gain experience and practice in content creation by working with Florida Tech Athletic Communications. I was also introduced to The Crimson (student-run newspaper), which I am now the editor-in-chief of. These experiences are almost exactly what I would like to do as a career, so this was a perfect introduction to the world of sports media. The advice I would give to multiplatform journalism/communication majors seeking an internship is simple: Practice! Practice! Practice! When I first started photographing my friends and slowly getting into sports, I was not the best. Over time, I ended up learning from other photographers, getting familiar with my settings, and started to find my style with photography."Congratulations, Josianne!#FloridaTech#summerinternship#journalism #communciations #careerreadiness#spacecoast#melbournefl

I interviewed over SIX times for various interships at paramount pictures before I finally recieved a “yes” After the first no, I shook it off because I wasn’t super passionate about international marketing. After the second no, I was sad but I may have fibbed about my skill level for photoshop and didn’t know there was a test.Third no, I was really hurt, I thought I crushed my meeting with the development executive but shouldn’t have told him I didn’t care for independent films. Fourth no, wasn’t too much of a surprise I didn’t want to work in post production and quite frankly didn’t understand what it was at that time. You’re probably thinking how did this kid with no prior experience get so many shots, story for another day but s/o to The Posse Foundation Scholarship program’s corporate partnership with ViacomCBS. Turns out you don’t always need a family member in #entertainmentindustry to get your big shot. Now the time has come, it’s 2015, I’m interviewing for a department I never heard of, none of the flashy ones like Talent Relations, Casting, Creative Marketing, but it was DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT. The recruiter told me it was their video games division…video games smh. 🤦🏽♂️ to say I was bummed was an understatement, I wanted to work with actors, I wanted to read scripts, I wanted to help design movie posters. Looking back, im pretty sure it was the one department no one applied for and they were forced to take me on. Because after (2) more interviews the job was mine. Digital Entertainment sat under the Interactive Marketing team our focus was all about app building, trying to crack the code on creating viral digital products fans could enjoy to promote our films. We were a small team of 3 but mighty. Roblox wasn’t a buzz word yet, but Candy Crush was 🤣I tell this story because it’s really a full circle moment, never did that 19 year old college student think digital entertainment was a place for him, nor that he wanted to be in. Digital wasn’t flashy at the time, still some could argue it isn’t, you didn’t get to go to the premieres like the interns in publicity, but what it was, was innovative. It was ahead of its time. That’s what keeps me going, the world of #digitalmedia is ever-changing and expanding. New platforms and revenue opportunities are constantly evolving with the internet and I get to be a part of it. Fast forward 8 years and many more interviews under my belt I’m exactly where I belong. Who knew! #careergrowth #internshipexperience

What advice would you give to a recent broadcast journalism graduate? ✏️Get hands on experience of how the ground situation will be.connect with experts, gather knowledge or seek inputs. Research opportunities for interns. Always start with a firm which has a brand. Give sometime in a firm where you have joined. path is not easy as Broadcast media is evolving at a rapid pace. Run along or ahead of it.
