Are hunting blinds worth it? ›

When there is no tree in the exact spot to be a good treestand set, I elect to use a ground blind instead. When using a ground blind, hunters can place it where the deer sign is prominent. Better blind placement will provide more shot opportunities when deer travel through the area, especially when bowhunting.

Avoid buying a blind larger than you need, as you'll appear more conspicuous to your prey. If you primarily hunt alone, hunting blinds intended to fit one person don't need to be much larger than 4'x4' or 4'x5'.

Keep Blinds Out Of Food Plots

Spook deer one time getting into or out of a blind, and the effectiveness of that blind could be tarnished for a week or more.

A blind is likely an unfamiliar object to a deer, which is reason enough to avoid traveling in that area. Deer and other animals need time to get used to it, so set it up well before the season begins — three to six weeks should be ample time.

An area that offers both, planted and natural food sources is an excellent spot for a permanent stand. Trails are a good location for permanent stands especially where multiple trails converge and can be covered from the stand. Deer prefer certain travel routes. Repeated use of these routes obviously forms a trail.

Putting up a ground blind for bow hunting only days before hunting sends a red flag to deer in that area that something is up. They have little time to become accustomed to this “new” object in their territory. Ideally, you want to deploy your blind more than a week before you plan to hunt out of it.

Deer are essentially red-green colorblind like some humans. Their color vision is limited to the short (blue) and middle (green) wavelength colors. As a result, deer likely can distinguish blue from red, but not green from red, or orange from red.

A blind with windows that close can also be very effective against human odor. When hunting in an elevated blind, the human scent is carried through the air much higher, keeping deer from catching any sign of the hunter. Add closed windows to this scenario, and even less human odor can escape.

The slightest unusual movement will result in deer leaving the area. To help minimize movement, the hunter should wear black clothing on the upper body, hands, and head. By wearing black, the hunter blends with the interior of the blind, keeping them more concealed.

How long does it take a deer to get used to a new blind? ›

Most expert whitetail hunters agree that a span of 3-6 weeks is needed for deer to get used to hunting blinds.

Brushing-in the blind is critical to success when hunting whitetail deer. The better you brush it in, the more relaxed deer will be. It is less of a problem if you can erect the blind a month or more before hunting, allowing deer to accept it, but even then, I advise extra concealment.

Blinds are easier, more comfortable, and less expensive than a tree stand. In some areas, deer or other game will become accustomed to your blind and walk right by as part of their daily routine. Deer who are used to deep wilderness areas can be a bit more sketchy, they will be gone if they see you first.

Deer can see into a ground blind at close distances. Your movements have to be calculated just as they would be when hunting from a tree stand or an open ground set. Trade out camo for black or dark clothing to better blend into the inside of the blind.

When you're that high above them, it's highly unlikely the deer will see you at the window with your bow drawn or hunting rifle ready. The system will likely look like any other tree to them.
