What happened in Higehiro Finale Episode 12?

The finale episode of Higehiro, The Future, picks up where the previous one ends with Yoshida ending his conversation with the mother of Sayu. After him, Sayu enters the room to talk to her and she begs her mother for forgiveness for all the troubles and frustrations she has caused. She also explained the reason for leaving home, kneeling in front of her mother who breaks down.

Sayu's mother tells her that all this time she has been clueless about where she went wrong and how Yoshida made her realize that she is the only parent Sayu has left. Sayu has to stay with her until she finishes high school and that she has to repeat the school year that she cut short. Afterward, she has the freedom to choose whatever path she wants to pursue.

As Sayu was at the doorstep, Yoshida approaches her and she is happy that she had talked to her mother. Yoshida is happy for her and Issa, standing at the corner, overheard them. Yoshida is at the guestroom, still restless until Sayu sneaks in and tells him that such will be the last time they would sleep in the same room. Sayu embraces him and tells him that she doesn't want to be away from him.

Sayu also expressed her happiness living with him and that it's their last time together. She asks him if they can do it for the last time and she explains that she wants to make sure they never forget each other. Yoshida tells her she doesn't need to do that to forget, they lived together for half a year, not as lovers or family. Sayu tells him she has never been that happy ever in her life. As Sayu sleeps soundly, Yoshida watched her.

When they take Yoshida on his way home, Issa excuses Sayu for a moment to talk with him. He offered Yoshida tickets for departure and Issa would just want to repay him for the kindness he showed to Sayu. Yoshida tells him that he could use the money to buy new clothes for her. Issa invites him that he could see Sayu anytime and visit them… then he asks him if he is actually in love with Sayu. He denies it but it was apparent, even telling he prefers older women.

Issa tells him Sayu made it far because of him and that he is grateful. Issa also tells him that hopefully, he found some meaning in meeting her. He leaves Sayu and Yoshida to talk, he asked her why she is wearing her uniform. As he was about to go, Sayu tells him she was happy to have run away and that they met each other and Sayu tells him he likes him and if he will give her a shot when she grows up and if he could wait for her.

He tells her to have a good life ahead and just keep the memories but she cannot do that. Sayu tells him she'll be back and that answer seems to satisfy Yoshida. As he teased her that she is a crybaby, she claps back with Yoshida not looking good with a beard. They part ways in hopes of seeing each other again.

When Sayu meets Issa at the parking lot, he asks if they said their farewell. Sayu says that it isn't goodbye. When Yoshida arrived home, he announces it and realizes no one is waiting there anymore. He found a note saying that Sayu left her scent there and to remember her forever. She even left her recipe notebook. Yoshida breaks down and the end credits roll.

Higehiro Post Credits Scene

For the first time, there is a post-credits scene in Higehiro and it is in the workplace of Yoshida. It jumps to two years later and Yoshida is holding a large project of Mishima. Their office plans for the success of Mishima's project. Yoshida respectfully rejects and that he had plans.

On his way home, Yoshida is talking to Asami on the phone and as he passes by the streetlight, he sees Sayu waiting there once more. Sayu tells him that she has a home but is too far away and asks him once more if she could stay with him again.

Higehiro Ending Explained

There's melancholy with the end of the anime series and not being on the negative, it has given everyone following the show the proper conclusion. With Sayu and Yoshida finally meeting again, with the help of good old friends like Asami, the ending of Higehiro satisfies the whole build-up for the whole season.

If there would be another season, it could show what happens next but knowing that Sayu finally has the discretion of choosing her own path given that she finished high school already, the thrill would never be the same. As the light novels already ended, it seems a blur if there would even be one.

Some good things really end and Higehiro did that on such a high note. It got the finale just right with everything that happened.

Higehiro finale is now up on Crunchyroll but no news yet as to the English dubbed version of the 13-episode anime.
