    What are some common challenges of being a department manager in the retail industry? ✏️As a department manager you act as an intermediary between the team and the store manager, so you commonly do not have as much time to fulfill your own tasks as you would like. You have to manage the needs of the team, tasks delegated by your manager, and still find time to monitor sell-through and partner with the merchants for assortment needs to ensure the teams success.

    CARROT or STICK?I stopped by Aldi yesterday and had a simple epiphany; they used a "carrot" to solve the problem of carts (or buggies, if your Southern like me) not being returned where they belong.They instituted a creative but very simple system that requires a quarter to get a cart. You can get your quarter back when you return your cart. It's that simple.What a genius solution to a maddening problem. But WHY do folks return the cart? I would argue that most folks will put their cart in the corral without manipulation. But what about the rest? That's where this wonderful plan comes into place. They incentivize people to do what they should do automatically. And here's the best part...IT'S YOUR QUARTER!!!, not Aldi's.Put the cart where it goes and the use of that cart costs you nothing. Don't put it back and it costs you a quarter.How can you apply this principle?#askgreatquestions #aldi #simplesolutions #carrot #stick

    What they told us:“You’ll never make it into Holland & Barrett stores, don’t waste your time or money.” ❌What happened next:We lost £64k… 🤦🏻Within 2 months of launching, our wholesaler went bust,Which cost us.Big time. 💰Some would have seen it as a sign to give up.“The high street isn’t for you”But, we saw it as a sign to try again.And this time, to work directly with .Once again, we were warned by industry cynics that the high street is dead and it’s hard to do good business.But something compelled us to take the risk.That was last year.Since then, our sales have soared past our expectations.And Holland & Barrett have been amazing to work with.The point is…There is a lot of cynicism and scaremongering in the start-up business world.And fair enough,One mistake could be catastrophic.But it could also be game-changing.The key is having a positive mental attitude.Trust your gut.Believe me, it will give you an unfair advantage over people who believe they will fail before they try.Huge thanks to Reshma Chohan our buyer at Holland & Barrett and Suzie Walker our Head of Sales, who has done an incredible job managing this account.P.S.
