The Golden Globes are always something of a head fake for those who follow the machinations of Hollywood and the various awards races. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out tonight’s trophies, tends to be a sort of shadowy, mysterious bunch, and their tastes have been known to vary widely from both the critical and audience consensus. The popular line of thought has held that the HFPA tends to be inclined to pass out awards to big stars who spend the most time doing the rounds at HFPA parties, though sometimes one studio or, ahem, exceptionally deep-pocketed streaming service suddenly sweeps for a show most people haven’t seen yet! The point being it’s actually kind of exciting because, really, there’s no telling who will walk away with what! This is the ceremony that dubbed the dark and existentially terrifying film The Martian 2015’s Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, after all.
That said, both the mix of attendees in the audience—stars from film and television, which admittedly used to be a crazier proposition in the years before the age of prestige TV, but still—and the preponderance of free alcohol among celebrities not yet exhausted by an endless parade of hair, makeup, red carpet events, uncomfortable shoes, and small talk among each other means that it’s usually a pretty fun show to follow along from your very comfortable couch at home. (Here’s how to watch from wherever you are, by the way.) Below, see everyone who left with a trophy tonight.
