Custard yogurt toast – a TikTok sensation!

This easy Air Fryer Yogurt Custard Toast recipe has been viral on TikTok for a very good reason. Wouldn’t you want to indulge in sweet and buttery custard toast every morning for breakfast? Yum!

It begins with a delicious 3-ingredient custard made from Greek yogurt, honey, and an egg. Spread on a soft slice of brioche, the custard toast is air fried for just 5 minutes, then is ready to be topped with a fresh berry medley. Even if you don’t have an air fryer, it can still be done in the oven!

This is a quick and easy recipe you can make in 10 minutes that doesn’t require any fancy tools or hard-to-find ingredients. It’s the perfect solution for the sweet tooth’s busy morning or when you’re craving something a little simpler than french toast.

Yogurt toast ingredients

  • Greek yogurt – Regular yogurt works too, but Greek yogurt is nice and light while still adding a delightful hint of tang.
  • Honey – Yogurt and egg on their own in the custard isn’t the best tasting combination, which is why you need a natural sweetener to help balance everything. Maple syrup or agave syrup work just as well here.
  • Egg – To emulsify the custard and help it caramelize as it bakes.
  • Toast – Brioche bread slices are best because they’re super soft and can be pressed down. If you don’t have brioche, use another kind of thick, white bread.
  • Berries – Use any fresh or frozen berries you love. I used blueberries and strawberries.
  • Powdered sugar – For serving.

How to make yogurt custard toast in the air fryer

Spreading sweet and tangy custard on toast and topping it with fresh berries is what my sweet breakfast dreams are made of! Plus, when made in the air fryer, the toast is ready to eat in no time:

  1. Make the custard.

Whisk the Greek yogurt, honey, and egg together in a bowl.

  2. Make a dent in the bread.

Press the middle of each bread slice down using a spoon. This will create a well for the custard.

  3. Assemble the TikTok toast.

Spoon some custard into the wells of the bread slices. Add the sliced strawberries and some blueberries on top.

  4. Air fry the custard toast.

Place the custard toasts into the basket of an air fryer and cook for 10 minutes. When they’re done, sprinkle each slice with powdered sugar or an extra drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Serve with extra fruit and enjoy!

Oven instructions

No air fryer? No problem! Cook the toast in the oven instead:

  1. Make the custard and assemble the toasts as normal.
  2. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a 400ºF oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle each slice with powdered sugar or a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Serve with extra fruit and enjoy!

Yogurt toast toppings

You don’t have to top your toast with berries! Instead, add any of these fun topping alternatives:

  • Sliced peaches
  • Blackberries
  • Raspberries
  • Chocolate chips
  • Nectarines
  • White chocolate
  • Sprinkles
  • Whipped cream
  • Apricots
  • Pitted cherries

Tips and variations

  • What kind of yogurt is best? Greek, regular, or dairy free yogurt all work well!
  • Mix-ins for custard – Play with the custard flavors by stirring in 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 tablespoon of lemon or orange zest, or a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • Large batch yogurt toast – If you’re serving this for brunch, double or triple the recipe and bake the individual slices on 1 or 2 parchment-lined baking sheets in the oven.

Storing leftovers

Store any leftover custard toast in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer until warmed and toasted.

Thank you for sharing your recipe. Unfortunately, this did not turn out as pictured for us. Our brioche bread was black after 10 minutes at 380, and the custard was heavily browned. I’ll try it again at a lower temp for a bit less time in hopes of a better result.

I am wondering if some air fryers have a higher heat level than mine. I’m sorry to hear that, please let me know how it turns out next time. Thanks for trying it.

My daughter is allergic to eggs, any suggestions on what to sub for the egg? She would love this!

HI Ker, hmm, I haven’t tried any egg replacements myself, but I know people have used aquafaba in recipes to replace eggs, but I’m not sure how it would turn out. What do you usually use to replace eggs?

I have to keep toying with this recipe I guess. The tops were a bit overdone, and the filling was not firmed up like custard. My air fryer doesn’t have “380°”, so I used 390° for 8:30 mins. Did I do something wrong?

Hi Beth, I’m sorry to hear that this didn’t work out for you. I would say if your air fryer does 370, do that and add a minute or two, I would say lower heat is better so your bread and custard don’t burn.

All I had on hand was regular sandwich bread so I decided to err on the side of caution and cooked in my PowerXL for 5 min. These were indeed custard-like. Thank you for posting this recipe. I’m so very excited to try combinations of add-ins!
